Burlap, Ruffles, and Flowers Oh My!

Today I made my first pillow out of burlap. I love burlap but I never have worked with it and it did present a few challenges for me. The biggest issue for me was that it was difficult to keep the burlap straight. Any small tug and the lines were off.  It also frays at the edges super easy which I love but you need to make sure you add enough of a seam allowance to account for that.

For my pillow I just did a very basic pillow.  I added a scrap piece of trim I had left over from my ruffle lampshade I shared yesterday.  The end result of the flower turned out to be a happy accident. Originally, the flower was just going to be basic layered circles with a button in the middle.. However, after I did that I just wasn't "feeling" it. It needed to be more dimensional. I will share later a short tutorial how I achieved that look.

I have to give a "shout out" to my Mom.  She made me the beautiful white crocheted throw that is in the pic.  She actually made me two of them which you will see in my living room when I share that part of the house in the near future.

Thanks for reading and feel free to leave me a comment. I would love to hear any tips you may have for working with burlap.

Until later,
Kristy

  1. I can imagine how difficult it is to work with this material.
The outcome of the pillow is great, very rustic.
Try double fold and stitch the hem, so you need about 4 cm. for the seams.
Or fix the panel to lining with the same colour.
    Good luck!

  6. I love the pillow (especially the addition of the ruffle and flower), but I have been having issues with burlap, too. That whole fraying thing makes me nuts! I bought some, but every time I go to use it for something, I just get frustrated and quit! Maybe I will give a pillow cover a shot. Thanks for the tip about the larger seam allowance!
